On 15 May 2026, DRC’s Ministry of Health (MoH) officially declared an Ebola outbreak affecting Ituri Province, eastern DRC, after sequencing at the National Institute for Biomedical Research Laboratory in Kinshasa confirmed the Bundibugyo strain. There is currently sustained community transmission in the DRC, with most cases reported from Ituri Province. For the latest case numbers please see the DRC’s MoH situational reports.
Uganda’s MoH also declared a Bundibugyo virus outbreak on 15 May 2026, following laboratory confirmation in an individual with recent travel history to Ituri Province, DRC, who sought medical care at a hospital in Kampala. On 27 August 2026, WHO and the Africa Centres for Disease Control and Prevention declared an end to the outbreak in Uganda following no new cases since the last case was discharged from care on 16 July 2026.
