Statutory guidance: Reception baseline assessment: administration guidance

Imported from official source

Guidance for schools administering the reception baseline assessment (RBA).

The administration guidance contains information and videos about administering the RBA, which is statutory for all reception pupils registered at state-funded maintained schools, special schools or academies, including free schools, in England. It provides details on how to:

  • access the 2 assessment services – ‘Assessment service: start an assessment’ and ‘Assessment service: manage your school’s assessments’
  • submit the headteacher’s declaration form
  • The modified administration guidance helps practitioners ensure that pupils with additional needs can access the assessment. It should be used alongside the administration guidance and provides additional support for practitioners, including details on how to:

  • administer the assessment with appropriate accessibility arrangements and adaptations
  • support pupils with specific needs, including those with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), sensory impairments or difficulties using a touchscreen
  • use accessibility settings, assistive technology and alternative formats, where appropriate
  • New video has been added, which as been updated for the 2026 to 2027 academic year.

Added the 2026 reception baseline assessment administration guidance for the academic year 2026 to 2027, including modified administration guidance. Removed the 2025 reception baseline assessment administration guidance accordingly.

Managing pupils and administering assessments video has been added to provide additional information to schools to support the delivery of the assessments.
