The Environment Act 2021 provided a new governance framework for the environment, with 4 main requirements:

  • a long-term Environmental Improvement Plan (EIP) that must set out the steps the government will take to improve the natural environment
  • an Environmental Principles Policy Statement that applies across government

    • Parliament established the Office for Environmental Protection (OEP) as the new oversight body. It designated the government’s 25 Year Environment Plan as England’s first EIP.
