Five new commissioners appointed to the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM)

Dr Andrew Hitchings, Dr Nigel Beckett, Dr Wajid Hussain, Professor Elvira Bramon and Professor Sarah Danson have been appointed as commissioners of the Commission on Human Medicines (CHM) for 4 years from 21 September 2026.

The CHM provides independent expert advice to ministers on the safety, quality and efficacy of medicines, and promotes the collection and investigation of information relating to adverse reactions for human medicines. It is an advisory non-departmental public body, sponsored by the Department of Health and Social Care.

In addition, the following commissioners have been re-appointed to CHM:

  • Professor Anthony Williams, Professor David Dockrell, Professor David Hunt, Dr Geraldine Mortimore and Julia Cons have been re-appointed as commissioners to CHM for 4 years from 1 July 2026
  • Professor Paul Dargan has been re-appointed as commissioner to CHM for 2 years from 1 July 2026
  • Professor Heather Wallace has been re-appointed as commissioner to CHM for 2 years from 1 September 2026
  • Professor David Moore has been re-appointed as commissioner to CHM for 4 years from 15 December 2026
  • The appointments will involve a time commitment of approximately 22 days per year, including 11 meetings and any ad-hoc meetings based on need. Remuneration for the roles will be at a rate of £325 per meeting
  • These appointments are made in accordance with the Cabinet Office Code of Governance for Public Appointments. The regulation of public appointments against the requirements of this Code is carried out by the Commissioner for Public Appointments.
