Press Release on Revision to Balance of Payments Statistics Financial Account

Certain items of the Balance of Payments Financial Account will be revised in line with the findings derived from the analyses conducted using administrative records-based microdata to enhance the data quality of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Statistics.   

As a result of the work carried out to enhance the data quality of the Balance of Payments and International Investment Position Statistics:

•    Under the Currency and Deposits item, movements in residents’ deposits against foreign banknotes, which are currently reflected unilaterally in statistics and do not stem from external economic transactions, will be decomposed as an adjustment item and incorporated into the statistics. 
•    In order to more accurately measure the movements in natural persons’ deposits abroad, transaction-based SWIFT data will be integrated into the data compilation process to address structural constraints in the existing data source. 
•    Financial derivatives that are not currently included in the statistics will be calculated using contract-based data and reported as a separate item under the Financial Account.

These revisions will be reflected in the Financial Account items of the Balance of Payments Statistics - June 2026, scheduled for release on August 13, 2026. The Net Errors and Omissions item will also be adjusted by the same amounts.
