IGAD Calls for Immediate De-Escalation in Northern Ethiopia
The Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD) is gravely concerned by the escalation of tensions in northern Ethiopia, including reports of renewed hostilities, the seizure of civilian airports and the disruption of air services.
IGAD calls on the parties to cease hostilities, exercise maximum restraint and refrain from any action that could further imperil civilian lives or undermine the peace process. The Agreement for Lasting Peace through a Permanent Cessation of Hostilities, signed in Pretoria on 2 November 2022, remains the agreed framework for addressing outstanding issues. Its commitments must be upheld in full.
IGAD urges the parties to return to direct dialogue without delay and calls on neighbouring countries to support de-escalation and refrain from actions that could aggravate the situation.
IGAD stands firmly behind the African Union’s diplomatic efforts and the preservation of the hard-won gains of the Pretoria Agreement. A return to widespread conflict would carry grave consequences for Ethiopia and the wider region.
