GENEVA, Aug 11 – More than 120 IPCC authors are meeting in Mexico City, Mexico, from 11 to 14 August to advance the First Order Draft of the 2027 Methodology Report on Carbon Dioxide Removal Technologies, Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage (CDR-CCUS). This report is being prepared by the IPCC’s Task Force on National Greenhouse Gas Inventories (TFI) and is scheduled for release in 2027.

The second Lead Author Meeting for the 2027 CDR-CCUS Methodology Report is hosted this week by the National Autonomous University of Mexico and supported by the Government of Mexico. It follows the authors’ first gathering in Rome, Italy, in April 2026, where they began preparing the draft. In Mexico City, they will develop the report further and consolidate the First Order Draft.

“Bringing together expertise from across regions and disciplines is essential to the IPCC process. This meeting is an important step in building a robust scientific and technical foundation for guidance that can be used by compilers of national greenhouse gas inventories,” said Takeshi Enoki, one of the Co-Chairs of the TFI.

The report is intended to support governments in estimating and transparently reporting carbon dioxide emissions and removals associated with CDR and CCUS activities in their national greenhouse gas inventories.

“Consistent, reliable and transparent greenhouse gas inventories are essential for informed climate policymaking. As carbon dioxide removal and capture approaches expand, our report will provide up-to-date methods grounded in the latest scientific and technical knowledge,” said Mazhar Hayat, TFI Co-Chair.

The 2027 CDR-CCUS Methodology Report will cover a broad range of technologies and approaches, including direct air capture, soil- and biomass-based removals, coastal ecosystem approaches, carbon capture, utilization and long-term storage, and the production of durable CO₂-derived materials.
