Announcement

The National Consumer Commission (NCC) participated in the inaugural food safety Indaba hosted by the Kwazulu-Natal Department of Economic Development, Tourism and Environmental Affairs. The Indaba focused on consumer protection measures implemented to protect consumers against unsafe food products.

The Indaba is timely and responds to consumer product safety concerns as outlined in the recently adopted United Nations Product Safety Principles.

The NCC continues to forge cooperation with provincial offices, regulators and law enforcement agencies to enhance consumer protection.

Speaking at the Indaba, the Acting Commissioner, Mr Hardin Ratshisusu said that “There are constant concerns on product labelling, sale of expired foodstuffs, suppliers not issuing proof of purchase, goods not labelled in accordance with the Consumer Protection Act. To mitigate this, the NCC has published guidelines for public comment, to help suppliers, especially spaza shop owners to comply.”

As part of consumer protection initiatives taking place in and around Durban, the NCC and the South African Revenue Services (Customs) inspected consignments of Clothing, Textile, Footwear and Leathergoods at the Durban Harbour. This inspection was to ascertain compliance with the provisions of section 24 of the Consumer Protection Act read with Regulation 6.

The NCC later visited Toyota Plant in Isipingo as part of stakeholder engagement on consumer protection.
