Announcement

On 7 September 2026, Minister of Climate Change and the Environment Sari Multala visited Posiva Oy’s spent nuclear fuel encapsulation plant and final disposal facility in Eurajoki. Multala was accompanied to the facility by the Estonian Minister of Energy and the Environment Andres Sutt and Latvia’s Minister for Climate and Energy Jānis Vitenbergs. A representative from the German federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy also participated in the visit.

On 4 August 2026, the Radiation and Nuclear Safety Authority (STUK) issued a favourable statement on the operating licence and safety assessment of the final disposal facility, which are a condition for granting the operating licence. Because of the favourable statement, the Ministry of Economic Affairs and Employment is now able to prepare a proposal for the Government to decide on Posiva’s licence application.

According to Minister Sari Multala, the proposal for the decision could be submitted to the Government's consideration in October. “I believe that the permit process that started in 2021 will be successfully completed now that we have received a favourable statement from STUK,” Multala said.

“Posiva’s encapsulation plant and final disposal facility are technically ready and can be put into operation soon. As a result of more than 40 years of systematic efforts, Finland will introduce the first final disposal facility for spent nuclear fuel in the world. This solution highlights not only the acceptability and responsible use of nuclear power in Finland but also our position as a global leader in nuclear waste management. The project is a good example of how both generating nuclear power and disposing nuclear waste can be managed responsibly,” the Minister added.
