From 22 to 28 September 2026, Belgium will participate in the High-Level Week of the 81st Session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA81) in New York. This annual gathering is the world's foremost international forum, bringing together Heads of State, Heads of Government and Ministers from across the world to discuss major international challenges within the framework of the United Nations. UNGA81 takes place in an increasingly fragmented world, marked by multiple crises, growing geopolitical tensions and a liquidity crisis that is putting pressure on the functioning of the United Nations. In this context, Belgium is making a clear choice: to support effective multilateralism, grounded in international law and capable of delivering concrete results. For an open country such as Belgium international cooperation is not simply a matter of principle: it contributes directly to our security, prosperity and the protection of our interests. Defending multilateralism also means accepting the need to reform it.
