Announcement

The CRTC is helping Canadians better understand where cellphone coverage is available and where there may be gaps.

October 2, 2026—Gatineau—Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC)

The CRTC is helping Canadians better understand where cellphone coverage is available and where there may be gaps.

Following a public consultation, the CRTC is introducing a new approach for how service providers report on their cellphone networks. This will give Canadians more detailed information about cellphone coverage in a specific area, making it easier to compare service options.

Canadians will also be able to report locations where coverage maps do not reflect their experience. This feedback will help improve the accuracy of information over time and provide a clearer picture of connectivity needs across Canada.

The CRTC collects data from service providers on their coverage and provides this information to Innovation, Science and Economic Development Canada (ISED), which uses it for its National Broadband Map. Better data will help service providers and governments identify areas where there are gaps, supporting planning and investments that improve connectivity.

“Better information leads to better decisions. By improving how cellphone coverage is reported and giving Canadians a way to flag gaps, we can build a clearer picture of connectivity across the country and help support better investment where it is needed.”

- Vicky Eatrides, Chairperson and Chief Executive Officer, CRTC

The CRTC is an independent quasi-judicial tribunal that regulates the Canadian communications sector in the public interest. The CRTC holds public consultations on telecommunications and broadcasting matters and makes decisions based on the public record.

The new standard will be phased in beginning with the next Annual Facilities Survey in early 2027.

The Consumer Protections Action Plan sets out the actions the CRTC is taking to protect and empower Canadians.
