Government of Canada Introduces Legislation to Reduce Red Tape and Support Economic Growth and Competitiveness

October 7, 2026 – Ottawa, Ontario – Treasury Board of Canada Secretariat

The Government of Canada is reducing red tape to lower costs, increase efficiency, and unlock Canada’s full economic potential, while ensuring regulations continue to protect Canadians and the environment.

Today, the Government introduced Bill S-7, the Cutting Red Tape for all Canadians Act. The bill proposes targeted amendments to reduce unnecessary regulatory burden under 31 individual pieces of legislation and their corresponding regulations administered by 11 federal departments and agencies.

These measures address irritants and obstacles identified by stakeholders. They are expected to save Canadians and businesses time and money by streamlining processes, avoiding duplication, supporting innovation and expediting decision-making, while maintaining important health, safety and environmental protections.

Last year, the government launched the Red Tape Review. Since then, progress has been made in removing unnecessary barriers, updating outdated rules and making practical changes that improve how government works for Canadians.

Building on this progress, this work continues as part of a comprehensive transformation toward a more agile, efficient and competitive regulatory system.

Today, the government is tabling legislation to catalyze this transformation and support a more modern legislative and regulatory framework.

The government intends to introduce new legislation on a recurring basis to continually remove unnecessary barriers that can emerge over time. This work will be informed by feedback from stakeholders and an ongoing government-wide review of regulatory requirements.
