NTIA's Office of Policy and International Affairs advances policies that promote U.S. leadership in digital commerce and next generation technologies, foster innovation, promote free markets, and enhance U.S. economic and national security through both domestic and internationally focused efforts. OPIA’s work focuses on preserving the internet’s openness and decentralization while advancing key U.S. interests, including in Super Intelligence and other emerging technologies. OPIA also leads and contributes to U.S. efforts at international telecommunications standards-setting fora and other relevant communications-related fora, such as the International Telecommunication Union and the 3rd Generation Partnership Project (3GPP) to promote U.S. strategic interests.

OPIA focuses on public policies that impact how Americans access and use the internet, a wide range of online services, and other forms of mass communication. Specific issues include, for example, developing and promoting the adoption of policies, standards, and best practices for issues such as children’s screen use in schools, communications security and resilience, and 5G, 6G, and next-generation communications.

To further NTIA’s mission, OPIA performs policy research; releases reports, letters and formal comments to the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) or other regulatory bodies; and reviews federal legislation. OPIA also plans and conducts public discussions to facilitate better dialogue on telecommunications, emerging technologies and information matters, and helps facilitate external research through publicly released data collections and other efforts.
