The meeting with the NATO Secretary General focused on the future of the Alliance, increased defence spending, the development of defence capabilities, deterring Russia, and supporting Ukraine.
“Our security environment has become more unpredictable, and the rules-based world order is under serious pressure. But the most important thing has not changed: NATO works. NATO has the capabilities, plans and will to defend every Ally and the entire NATO territory,” Michal said.
According to Michal, all Allies should meet the commitment to spend 5% of GDP on defence as soon as possible, so that the necessary defence capabilities can be developed rapidly using these resources. This is a challenging task, but a fairer sharing of the burden within NATO is a necessary effort, and Estonia is setting a good example in this regard.
“Over the next ten years, we will invest €26 billion in national defence. Half of that amount will go directly towards armaments and military capabilities. Estonia’s defence industry turnover has grown by an average of 44% annually over the past three years. Last week, the Estonian government decided to establish a new defence industry park, which will enable the production of military explosives and additional ammunition,” Michal said.
Strengthening NATO’s deterrence and defence capabilities sends a clear message to Russia: the Alliance takes threats seriously and is committed to ensuring its security and defence. According to Michal, Russia’s increasingly risky behaviour and its growing number of hybrid attacks are intended to divert attention from supporting Ukraine. We will respond to Russia’s actions collectively and continue providing robust assistance to Ukraine.
