“We assured President Volodymyr Zelenskyy that Europe’s support will remain unwavering until a lasting and just peace is achieved. Russia does not want peace: it wants to crush Ukraine. Ukraine urgently needs more financial and military assistance to defend itself against Russia’s barbaric attacks. Europe has always found a way to increase its support, and it will do so again,” said Prime Minister Kristen Michal.

Ukraine also took a step forward on its path towards EU membership this week, opening two more negotiation clusters. “Progress in the negotiations gives Ukrainians hope and encourages them to continue the necessary reforms,” said the Prime Minister, adding that he supports gradually involving candidate countries in the EU’s work even before accession.

In the discussion on defence and security, an important outcome for Estonia was that the European Council highlighted Eastern Flank Watch, a project to strengthen the defence of the EU’s eastern border by improving surveillance, defence and military mobility. “This week also brought the welcome news that Estonia will receive nearly €32 million from the European Union to strengthen drone surveillance along its eastern border,” said Michal.

On the first day of the European Council, leaders discussed joint action to address high energy prices and support Europe’s economy. Several countries share Estonia’s concerns about the new emissions trading system, which would have a limited impact but would raise fuel prices. Yesterday, leaders agreed to review the system’s impact.
