Announcement

The EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadis visited Minister for Fisheries, Hunting, Agriculture and Self-sufficiency, Peter Borg in Greenland, on the 15-16 October 2026.

The intention of the visit was to continue the dialogue on the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership Agreement and its underlying Fisheries Protocol, international cooperation between Greenland and the EU on fisheries and to inform each other of priorities on fisheries and blue economy. Following up on the objectives of the Joint Declaration between the EU, Denmark and Greenland.

Furthermore, it was a great opportunity for Minister Borg to give Commissioner Kadis insight in the importance of the fishing industry for the Greenlandic economy and the Greenland institutions managing fisheries. The trip included visits to Greenland Fisheries and Hunting Control Authority, the EU Border Inspection Post, Greenland Institute of Natural Resources, SILA biology program at Greenland University and Royal Greenland.

In connection with the visit, Minister Borg concluded: “Fisheries have always been a part of the Greenland-EU partnership, where we have had a fisheries agreement since 1985 when Greenland left the EU. But we also cooperate with the EU on fisheries in several international fora and the EU is an important market for Greenlandic fish and shellfish products. Blue economy is also part of the common objectives of the Joint Declaration signed earlier this year. Therefore, I am pleased to welcome Commissioner Kadis to Greenland and showing him how essential fisheries and the blue economy sector is for Greenland and the Greenlandic economy. The fisheries cooperation between Greenland and the EU has developed over time and it is important that it keeps adjusting to the development of Greenland. The continued dialogue between us is therefore very valuable and I appreciate the constructive discussions that I had with my European colleague during his visit.”
