Research: Pathways to SF6 free distribution networks

Imported from official source

This report examines the impact of phasing out the gas sulphur hexafluoride (SF6) from new switchgear installed on the Great Britain electricity distribution network. It draws on extensive engagement with network operators, manufacturers, regulators and industry experts.

The report conducts an assessment of current technical, regulatory and economic blockers to moving away from SF6 technologies. It also examines SF6-free technologies currently available to both distribution and transmission owners. It concludes with recommendations of how to phase out SF6, outlining a potential timeline of banning SF6 by voltage.
