Nordic transport ministers meet in Denmark, critical transport projects on the agenda

The Nordic transport ministers will convene for an informal meeting in Copenhagen on 22 and 23 October 2026. Minister of Transport and Communications Lulu Ranne will attend the meeting.

The ministers will discuss, among other things, how the Nordic countries could work together to protect critical transport infrastructure and strengthen resilience.

“The Nordic countries already have excellent cooperation in cross-border preparedness in the transport sector. Earlier this year, the Joint Nordic Strategy for Transport System Preparedness was published. In the strategy, we made a joint commitment to promote infrastructure projects that are most critical for preparedness. The strategy does not include any large-scale bridge or tunnel projects between the Nordic countries that some stakeholders have called for but specifically pledges to jointly promote the critical projects. Rail Nordica is one of them,” says Minister Ranne.

“It is important that we have shared views when negotiating EU priorities for military mobility,” Minister Ranne says.

The long-term maintenance of the transport infrastructure is part of preparedness. Adequate funding for basic transport infrastructure management is essential for preparedness. In addition to a reliable infrastructure, it is also necessary to safeguard the continuity of transports.

The ministers will also discuss the challenges facing public transport services in sparsely populated rural areas.
