OTTAWA, October 8, 2026 – On Ombuds Day, Canada’s federal ombuds offices are coming together to recognize the vital role ombuds institutions play in promoting and strengthening fairness, accountability, transparency, and public trust across government.

We are proud to be recognized by international institutions, including by the United Nations General Assembly through a resolution, and by the Venice Commission, the Council of Europe’s Commission for Democracy through Law.

While each institution has a distinct mandate, jurisdiction and governing framework, they share a commitment to helping people raise concerns, navigate processes and seek fair treatment. They also contribute to improving programs, policies and practices by identifying systemic issues and recommending positive change.

People who access federal programs and services are increasingly relying on independent third‑party, neutral, and impartial oversight institutions to analyze issues and provide sound recommendations to federal institutions.

Federal ombuds institutions provide independent and impartial assistance by:

  • Establishing confidential mechanisms to receive and review inquiries and complaints from the public.
  • Helping individuals understand and navigate complex government processes.
  • Investigating concerns regarding fairness, service delivery, and administrative decision-making.
  • Identifying systemic issues affecting a large number of people or affecting vulnerable populations.
  • Making recommendations to improve government programs, policies, and services.
